FREDERIC REMINGTON
Study of a Foot Soldier.

Pen and ink on paper, circa 1898. 232x125 mm; 9 1/8x5 inches.

Acquired Malbert Fine Arts, Chicago, by the current owner, with a copy of the receipt; private collection, Florida.

During the Spanish-American war, Remington (1861-1909) worked for the New York Journal under William Randolph Hearst as a war correspondent. In 1897, prior to the sinking of the U.S.S. Maine, he was sent to Cuba to cover the Spanish holding Cuban prisoners in reconcentration camps. Remington's job was to depict Spanish atrocities and the battles taking place in the revolution. Remington was unhappy with the assignment and repeatly requested to return to the United States, to which Hearst reputedly replied, "Please remain. You furnish the pictures, I'll furnish the war."
