Lot 70: Adolphe Mouron Cassandre, Triplex, pencil maquette, 1930. Estimate $25,000 to $35,000.

This admired sale is coming together in a powerful way. This auction is led by one of A.M. Cassandre’s most memorable and scarce images, LMS / Best Way, 1928 — it has been nine years since a copy last appeared on the market (see the cover of our Winter-Spring 2022 issue of The Trumpet). Cassandre is also represented by an exquisite signed pencil study for his famous Triplex image.

Art Deco

Art Deco, Cubist and Futurist aficionados will be besotted with two offerings by Marcello Nizzoli for Campari, each 1926. Other important works from the first half of the twentieth century include a complete run of Czechoslovakia’s Zijeme magazine, 1931–32, with its memorable and sophisticated photomontage cover designs by Ladislav Sutnar—a desirable item for collectors in its unbound state.

Among the best-known classics of Modern graphic design will be Erik Nitsche’s USS Nautilus, 1955, and Paul Rand’s famous IBM, 1982.

  • Lot 63: Toyonosuke Kurozumi, (Osaka Railways / Shirosaki in Winter), circa 1935. Estimate $2,500 to $3,500.
  • Lot 87: Tom Purvis, Austin Reed LTD, circa 1930s. Estimate $7,000 to $10,000.

International Art Nouveau

Lot 20: Adolfo Hohenstein, Esposizione D’Igiene, 1900. Estimate $4,000 to $6,000.
