Old Master Through Modern Prints: November 3, 2022 Auction Highlights

Lot 3: Martin Schongauer, The Crucifixion, engraving, circa 1480. Estimate $60,000 to $90,000.

This season’s installment of our semiannual auction of fine Old Master through Modern Prints boasts several stellar private collections, each appearing at auction for the first time, including a European single-owner collection of more than 100 outstanding Rembrandt etchings, a New York private collection of iconic prints by M.C. Escher and an American collector’s selection of Old Master prints studded with engravings by Martin Schongauer and Albrecht Dürer.

At Auction November 3: left: Lot 31: Albrecht Dürer, The Nemesis, engraving, circa 1501-02. Estimate $50,000 to $80,000; right: Lot 78: Rembrandt van Rijn, The Small Lion Hunt (with One Lion), etching, circa 1629. Estimate $12,000 to $18,000.

Among the nineteenth century offerings are a group of scarce etchings by James A. M. Whistler and Edouard Manet, Impressionist prints by Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, Camille Pissarro, Pierre-Auguste Renoir’s Les Deux Baigneuses, 1895, a unique etching printed in red, as well as show-stopping fin de siècle works by Henri Toulouse-Lautrec, Paul Gauguin and James Ensor.

The modern American selection includes Edward Hopper’s Night Shadows, strong works by Gustave Baumann, Thomas Hart Benton, Milton Avery and Martin Lewis’s Shadow Dance, 1930.

Completing the auction is a stunning showcase of modern printmaking, including Picasso’s iconic lithograph Françoise, Matisse’s equally alluring lithograph Odalisque, brasero et coup de fruits, and Chagall’s vibrant Romeo and Juliet, a deluxe edition before text, as well as signature works by Joan Miro, Max Beckmann and Henry Moore.

The sale ends with one of the most significant private collections of M. C. Escher prints to be offered at auction in decades — from his early Italian lithographs of the 1930s to his mathematically inspired works from the 1940s and 1950s, we are delighted to offer these prints which have excited collectors for more than half a century.
