American Art: At Auction September 17, 2020

Our season begins with our annual American Art auction, including a robust selection of paintings, watercolors and drawings by premier artists of the late-nineteenth through the mid-twentieth centuries. Among top lots are watercolors by Childe Hassam, including signature Impressionist scenes from Celia Thaxter’s summer house at Appledore and the Isle of Shoals; a charming oil by Anna Mary Robertson Moses, also known as Grandma Moses, completed at 101 years of age; an important figurative drawing by Marsden Hartley; and luminous seascapes by Alfred T. Bricher. The auction encompasses the visions of Hudson River School, Impressionism, Regionalism, Social Realism and early Modernism with further works by Charles Burchfield, John Marin, Reginald Marsh, Severin Roesen and Joseph Stella.

This auction will be held live and conducted remotely by Swann auctioneers taking bids from multiple platforms. While there will not be bidding in the room, we will be accepting order bids, and interested buyers will be able to participate live online via the Swann Galleries App. The app is available in the App Store and on Google Play, and it can also be accessed on a desktop at live.swanngalleries.com. 

Please note: limited phone bidding will be available for this auction. Phone bidding registrations will close the day before the sale at 4pm.
