WILLIAM LAWSON (DATES UNKNOWN)

NEW ENGLAND VIA MAINLINER / UNITED AIR LINES. Circa 1953.

30x20 1/4 inches, 76 1/4x51 1/2 cm.
Condition B+: creases, abrasions and restoration at edges and in text and image.

Boston's Old North Church, built in 1723, and famously the site of Paul Revere's "one if by land, two if by sea" signal, seen beneath the shadow of the wing of a United Air Lines Mainliner flying overhead. In 1954, the church's steeple was felled by a hurricane; the current steeple, while drawing on original designs (and the re-designs after an earlier hurricane in 1804 also brought the steeple down) appears different to the one Lawson captures here. Rare.
