STERN, BERT (1929- ) "Marilyn Monroe (Crucifix)."

  • Notes: From the photographer; to the present owner.

Bert Stern, who was then working for Vogue magazine, was the last photographer to shoot Marilyn. During the course of three sessions, which took place at the Bel Air Hotel, Los Angeles, in July 1962, he made 2,500 photographs.

Marilyn edited some of the photographs by marking them with a red X on the contact sheets. After her death, Stern made compelling prints of these studies in an oversized format. The resulting image--soft, poetic, and ethereal--captures Marilyn's fragile nature while the superimposed X, which recalls a crucifix, adds another layer of symbolism to his portrait.
