SMITH, W. EUGENE (1918-1978) "Saipan."

  • Notes: A rare vintage print of one of Smith's most poignant and important images. This groundbreaking photojournalist, who started his career during World War II, made a name for himself as a humanistic war photographer who went on to reenforce the power of documentary images as a tool for social change.

The handwritten notation on print verso reads: "On Saipan. Soldier holding baby who had been wedged facedown. Baby sent back to Jeep convoy -- native women wouldn't touch it because so ill. Flies were feeding on the pus from the baby's infected eye."

Smith's insistence on placing himself in danger resulted in personal injuries that contributed to his premature death. As a professional, his dedication to his work, desire to control the manner in which his photographs were represented, and his sensitivity to the power of the photo essay led to numerous editorial conflicts at Life magazine, and to his ultimate dismissal.

The history of this picture's appearance in the print media is extensive. Handwritten notations "Best of Life," may be seen alongside hand stamps such as "FAMOUS PICTURE, DO NOT CIRCULATE." The fragile nature of the photographic print was recognized by staff member Doris O'Neil, who sought to protect it.

The image is one of the most compelling photographs of the 20th-century.

Master of the Photographic Essay: W. Eugene Smith, pl. 2:104, 26.
