SIR BERNARD PARTRIDGE (1861-1945) TAKE UP THE SWORD OF JUSTICE. Circa 1914.
54 3/4x39 3/4 inches, 139x101 cm. David Allen & Sons Ltd., Middlesex.
Condition B: tears, repaired tears, creases and abrasions in margins and image; darkening in margins and text.
As if rising up out of the Atlantic Ocean, a blonde Britannia in a flowing white gown and red cape is dramatically holding out a gilded sword. Behind her is the sinking Lusitania and the piteously outstretched arms of those who drowned after the ship was torpedoed by a German submarine. This is the rare/span larger format. IWM p. 71.
