  • Provenance: Acquired from the artist at his exhibition at the Centro Cultural Recoleta, Buenos Aires, Argentina (1998.)
    Private collection, Massachusetts.

Executed while he lived in Berlin, Germany, Ricardo Cinalli's large work on paper is a depiction of a man as a Satyr (Satiro), from Greek mythology, a male nature spirit with features of a horse, often associated with lust and revelry.

Born in Rosario, Argentina in 1948, to an Italian father, Ricardo Cinalli has lived and worked in the East End of London since 1973. He executes layered paper drawings on a large scale by overlapping woven papers and layering dense levels of pastel to create image depth. Cinalli's theatre designs and monumental frescoes are inspired by the art of the Renaissance and his Italian roots are evident in the mythological and allegorical figures influenced by Michelangelo's fresco for the Sistine Chapel Ceiling. Symbolically his practice examines humanity, its social mobility, and its blindness. An observer of difference, whose work moves us with its magical realism.
