Sylvia Rivera and Marsha P. Johnson were prominent figures in the LGBTQ+ rights movement, particularly known for their activism surrounding transgender rights and their co-founding of STAR (Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries) to support the homeless LGBTQ+ youth. A Puerto Rican American trans woman, Rivera was a vocal advocate for transgender inclusion in the broader gay rights movement. Johnson was a member of the Gay Liberation Front (GLF) and beginning in 1987, she was an AIDS activist with ACT UP. They were both active and crucial in the Stonewall uprising in 1969.

Rivera faced discrimination within the LGBTQ+ movement due to her transgender identity and background. Her activism included campaigning for a city nondiscrimination law and challenging exclusionary practices within gay rights organizations.
