  • Provenance: Groundbreaking Caribbean-American writer, poet, and activist, Audre Lorde seamlessly intertwined her personal experience as a queer woman of color with a passion for social justice throughout her works. Born and raised in Harlem during the great depression, she became an influential voice in American literature during a time when the odds were stacked against her. Through works like "The Black Unicorn" and "Sister Outsider" she explored themes of identity, sexuality, race, and social justice with brutal honesty.

Lorde was deeply committed to activism across intersecting movements, advocating that LGBTQ+ rights were inseparable from fights against racism and sexism. Her involvement in the civil rights movement and black feminist organizing led her to her co-founding the Kitchen Table: Women of Color Press, where they were committed to bolstering the voices and publication of queer women of color. Her 1979 essay titled "The Master's Tools Will Never Dismantle the Master's House" became foundational to intersectional feminism, advocating for new approaches to liberation that acknowledged the complexity of identity and oppression.
