Blackheart: A Journal of Writing and Graphics by Black Gay Men, issues 2 and 3. 1984-1985.

56 and 48 pages. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers; moderate foxing to issue #2. New York: Blackheart Collective, 1984-1985

The Blackheart Collective was founded in 1980 by Fred Carl, Anthony Crusor, and Isaac Jackson, inspired in part by New York's lively Black lesbian literary scene. Their story is told in Kevin McGruder, "To be Heard in Print: Black Gay Writers in 1980s New York," in Obsidian III 6:1 (Spring/Summer 2005).

The journal includes poetry, essays, book reviews, and more. "Blackheart 2" is subtitled "The Prison Issue," featuring work by and about incarcerated men. "Blackheart 3" is subtitled "The Telling of Us," with cover art honoring Langston Hughes, James Baldwin, Little Richard and other icons, and a piece by writer Joseph Beam. None traced at auction.
Each about 8 1/4 x 5 1/2 in. (21 x 14 cm.)
