GOREY, EDWARD. 2-panel ink and watercolor cartoon drawn on the cover of a going-away card for a Doubleday coworker, Estelle Lichtenstein. 190x101 mm; 7 1/2x4 inches, on card. Folds open to show signatures of twelve co-workers, including Gorey's, Signed as "Ted." [New York, 1957]

  • Notes: Charming illustration from Gorey''s early career when he was working at Doubleday & Company and in the year that he published "The Doubtful Guest" which became one of his best-known works and introduced the popular title character. Gorey and Lichtenstein had a warm work relationship. When she left the publishing house that year to raise a family, he bid farewell to her in his usual wry, comic fashion by juxtaposing images of her impending desk-to-domesticity duties swap. The top illustration shows her in office attire, wielding a pen over a desk full of books and manuscripts to edit while the bottom image cleverly mimics the scene with an apron-clad Estelle hoisting a wooden spoon over a kitchen table piled with cookbooks and bowls.
