George Moore

(Dates Unknown)

The Rover. Circa 1895.

Condition B+: restored tears at edges; minor restored losses and restoration along vertical and horizontal folds; expert overpainting in margins.

When Dangerfield printing launched in 1891, illustrator George Moore designed a handful of magazine covers and posters for British bicycle companies such as: Excelsior, Triumph, Psycho Cycles, The 'James,' Quadrant Cycles, Rudge Cycles, Swift, Clement, Humber and others. He also was employed by Temple Press, publisher of The Motor magazine.

The Rover, produced in 1884 by John Kemp Starley of Coventry, was considered to be the forerunner of the modern bicycle. It was the first pedal-powered vehicle to replace the penny-farthing / high-wheeler bike with a much more stable and safe form with two equal-sized wheels. This structure became the standard for bicycles and helped to create a booming industry in the 1890s.
61½x40 inches, 154x102 cm. Dangerfield, London.
