ED GEORGE (DATES UNKNOWN) 7 - UP WET UN WILD. 1970.
35 1/2x58 1/2 inches, 90 1/4x148 1/2 cm. The Seven-Up Co.
Condition B: repaired tears at edges, some into image; clear tape on verso, along edges and tears; creases throughout; small losses and abrasions at edges. Paper.
Illustrated in 1969 for the larger billboard format, and printed in this smaller size in 1970, this whimsical, cartoonish design by Ed George appears to be directly influenced by the Beatles' Yellow Submarine album art from 1968. By turning the sideways 7-Up bottle into the submarine itself, he complements the other posters in this set (including two by Bob Taylor), in which the bottles are transformed into a bi-plane and a blimp. The billboard posters for the UnCola campaign were chosen through a contest, and renowned artists such as Milton Glaser and Seymour Chwast also designed for the company. Each year, the Seven-Up company sold some of its billboards and posters to the public, in a few sizes, starting at 50 cents for the smallest, to $8.50 for the billboard.
