1816-1876

Collection of ephemera from the noted actress. 1870s.

7 items, various sizes up to 11¾ x 9¼ inches; 295x235 mm; various conditions.

The popular actress Charlotte Cushman was about as close to "out" as any mid-19th century public figure could be; she was mostly inseparable from actress Matilda Hays from 1848 to 1858, and the pair often dressed identically. Included in this lot:

Carte de visite photograph of Cushman by Warren, Boston, circa 1870, plus a later copy print of the same image by Brown Brothers.

Issue of "The Ray" featuring a cover playbill for Cushman as Queen Katherine in "King Henry VIII" at Boston Theatre. Boston, 11 December 1873.

Broadside for a performance of Guy Mannering at Booth's Theatre: "The opportunities to see the farewell impersonations of the illustratious tragedienne, Miss Charlotte Cushman, are now rapidly growing less." [New York], 7 November 1874.

Issue of "The Globe Theatre Programme" featuring a cover program for Cushman's "farewell engagement in this city" in "Guy Mannering," laid down on an album leaf. Boston, 8 May 1875.

Engraved portrait of Cushman "from the original portrait by Chappel."

Later print of Cushman and her sister Susan as Romeo and Juliet in London circa 1845.
