CARL HAP (KARL HAPPEL 1819-1914) GRAND CHERRY-BRANDY COINTREAU. 1897.
49 3/4x38 inches, 126x96 1/2 cm. Camis, Paris.
Condition B+ / B: minor repaired tears in margins; creases, foxing and time staining in margins and image. Framed.
Hap was an academic German painter who also worked as a magazine illustrator. His illustration style was dramatically different than his paintings, and his few posters reflect a caricature style similar to Albert Guillaume who also worked for the Camis printer. Here Hap self-referentially includes a copy of the French magazine Fin-De-Siècle for which he worked. The image itself is a delightfully immoral scene of an aristocratic man under the double influence of the Cherry Brandy and the sensuous woman. Clearly no stranger to such a situation, she is taking advantage of her lover's intoxication and reaching for his wallet! Cointreau was founded in 1849 and is still famous around the world for its square bottle. The company also produced other aperitifs such as Cherry Brandy. Cointreau p. 30, DFP-II 461, Meisterplakate 116.
