ARTHUR B. DAVIES Sacrifice.

ARTHUR B. DAVIES
Sacrifice.

Oil on canvas. 229x457 mm; 9x18 inches. Signed in oil, lower left recto.

Sold Christie's, New York, September 21, 1984, lot 151; private collection, New York; thence by descent to the current owner, private collection, New Jersey.

Davies (1862-1928) was born in Utica, New York, but his family relocated to Chicago where he attended the Chicago Academy of Design and the Art Institute of Chicago. He later moved to New York where, early in his career, he worked as an illustrator and attended the Art Students League. Around 1900, he started to paint the dream-like compositions with literary and mythological references for which he is most recognized. While his own works seem rooted in 19th century style and subject matter, he was a proponent of Modernism, becoming the president of the Society of Independent Artists in 1911 and a principal organizer of the Armory Show in 1913, along with William Glackens (see lots 24 and 25) and several others.
