ARBUS, DIANE (1923-1971) "Waitress, Nudist Camp, N.J."


  • Notes: Purchased from Sotheby's, October 7, 1993; to the Collection of Phillip Periman.

    The inscription reads: "Dear C., P. and S, Please do go to the Museum of Modern Art, Main Floor, West Wing (across from J. Pollock) to see the New Documents 1/3 of which are mine..."
    Also with the original mailing envelope addressed by the photographer in ink and with her "131 1/2 Chas St. NYC 10014" return address, also in her hand, and postmarked April 20, 1967.
    The "New Documents" exhibition opened at MoMA on March 6, 1967, and included work by Arbus, Winogrand, and Friedlander.
