ALBERT STERNER (1863-1946) U.S. NAVY / OVER THERE. 1917.
59x40 1/4 inches, 150x102 cm. American Lithographic Co., New York.
Condition B+: repaired tears at edges, some affecting image; overpainting and restoration in margins.
In 1917, George M. Cohan composed the song that more than any other would become the anthem for the First World War: "Over There." Using the song's title, Sterner depicts a somber, strong image of Columbia, sword in hand, beneath the billowing stars and stripes, and a sky filled with curls of smoke emanating from the ships of the Navy. She is pointing a sailor to the distant shores of Europe. Rawls p. 80, Theofiles 49, Navy 2.
