ACCONCI, VITO (1940- ) "Following Piece." Ferrotyped silver print, 3½x3¼ inches (8.9x8.3 cm.), with Acconci's initials,

  • Notes: A variant of this image is in the collection of The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

In 1969 Acconci started to produce photographic works that documented his body's "occupancy" of a public space (i.e., a city street). In "Following Piece," which he executed daily over a period of a month, Acconci followed a randomly chosen stranger through the streets of New York until that person entered an inaccessible, private location. Acconci described the activity, "I am almost not an 'I' anymore; I put myself in the service of this scheme."
