Five Centuries of American History


This sale covers American history from the sixteenth to twentieth centuries, with a diploma from the Princeton Class of 1783, whose commencement was attended by Washington and the Continental Congress; a variant printing of the Bay Psalm Book; a first edition of the earliest firsthand account of the Lewis and Clark expedition; and an unusual volume of original outsider and occult art from 1904.

Lot 254: Francis Scott Key, Star Spangled Banner, first printing, circa 1814-16. $8,000 to $12,000.

Nineteenth Century


Lot 258: William Sydney Porter, a.k.a. “O. Henry,” archive of drawings made to illustrate a lost mining memoir, circa 1883-84. $30,000 to $40,000.
Lot 197: Lucy Parsons, labor organizer, albumen cabinet card, New York, 1886. $800 to $1,200.
Lot 263: Daniel L.F. Swift, journal as third mate on a Pacific Whaling voyage, 1848-1850. $3,000 to $4,0000.

Civil War-Era


Lot 145: The Lincoln and Johnson Union Campaign Songster, Philadelphia, 1864. $3,000 to $4,000.
Lot 92: Sprague Light Cavalry! color-printed broadside, New York, 1863. $5,000 to $7,500.

Revolutionary War-Era


Lot 165: Diploma from the Princeton Class of 1783, whose commencement was attended by Washington and the Continental Congress, 1783. $10,000 to $15,000.

Religious Texts


Lot 20: [The Bay Psalm Book], Cambridge, printed for Hezekiah Usher of Boston, circa 1648-65. $50,000 to $75,000.
Lot 157: The Book of Mormon, first edition, Palmyra, 1830. $40,000 to $60,000.

Latin Americana


Lot 223: Noticia estraordinario, viva la patria y el ejercito mexicano, letterpress broadside, probable first announcement in Mexico City of the fall of the Alamo, 1836. $40,000 to $60,000.

Westward Expansion


Lot 135: Patrick Gass, first edition of the earliest first-hand account of the Lewis and Clarke expedition, Pittsburgh, 1807. $6,000 to $9,000.
Lot 262: Pair of photographs of Thomas Moran at the Grand Canyon, silver prints, 1901. $1,500 to $2,500.
